Presiding over the striking core of the commercial district east of Main Street, The Porter House is a landmarked architectural paragon and a quintessential symbol of an era, an era long gone and fondly remembered. Commissioned in 1906 for James Porter and Company, a specialized importer and seller of crockery and china, the building is a Chicago style influenced stately brick and beam warehouse. Upon completion, the new Porter warehouse was described in the Free Press as “one of the handsomest business blocks in the city”. The opulent exterior provides a perfect contrast to the clean lines and contemporary look of the loft style interiors that are accented with century old features. The Porter House redevelopment will embrace the past while looking to the future.
